CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES (DHS)

Termination of Parental Rights

"Termination of parental rights" can be the most frightening words a parent may ever hear. It is the title given to cases when the DHS attempts to terminate any and all rights you have to see, visit, raise, or parent your children.

A termination of parental rights case begins when the DHS receives a complaint of suspected child abuse. If the report alleges one of the forms of abuse enumerated in the Child Protection Law statute, the government must file a petition in family court seeking termination of parental rights, regardless of the "facts and circumstances," or mitigating information found in a particular case.

This obvious emotionally charged urgent situation often catches parents or caregivers off guard - most people are unprepared for the nature and severity of the allegations. Be patient. At Kirsch & Satawa, we are committed to preserving families and protecting a parent's fundamental right to parent. Lisa Kirsch Satawa has successfully handled and tried hundreds of these cases - with the assistance of the top medical, scientific, and psychological experts in the country. She has attended multiple seminars, trainings, and workshops on every aspect of child abuse and neglect - physical, sexual, and psychological. Her expertise, specialized training, and experience make her uniquely qualified to provide parents with the best representation from initial DHS contact through conclusion of the case.
